John Thornton [1720-1790]

John Thornton was a Director of the Bank of England and of the Russia Company. He was co-founder of the Marine Society and its first Treasurer. His half-sister Hannah married William Wilberforce, uncle of the MP of the same name. Thornton was Newton's sponsor at Olney when Newton was curate-in-charge of St Peter and St Paul. He presented Newton into the living of St Mary Wooolnoth, London.
